Making Fairy & Wizard Wands

The Stick

As the basis of your wand, we suggest that you either use wooden sticks or pencils.

With wooden sticks you will need to apply a covering of paint or cover with ribbons.

When using ribbons, we find it best to apply double sided tape around the stick before you start - it's good to wind it up the stick in a spiral and then, after peeling of the tape backing, wind the ribbon in the opposite direction, pressing down firmly.

The advantage of using pencils is that the crafters will have another use for the wand after the craft even or party is over.

Toppers

As a topper for the wand, you will need to cut stars from foam or card - decorative scissors can be great for this, giving the star an extra dimension.

The best effect is acheived by using two shapes, so the wand has a topper on the front and the back.

Embellishing your Topper

Sequins are terrific for this as are self adhesive gems and both glitter and glitter glue. In fact the possibilities are almost endless.....

We would suggest you don't use heavy gems as the topper is unlikely to take the weight.

If you cut up sequin waste and add this between your two toppers, you can get a real sparkly effect. When packing kits we normally allow 10cm of sequin waste per wand - if this is cut at angles from side to side you will have more than enough to make the sparkles for a wand. Adding contrasting colours would create a really different effect.

Foil shred is also ideal and can be trapped between the two toppers in the same way.

Glitter pens or gel pens are great for adding that final detail.

Attaching your Topper

You will ned to use either fast tack glue, double sided tape or adhesive foam pads to attach your chosen topper to your stick or pencil.

PVA glue won't work - honestly! Picture a star sliding down a pencil, leaving a trail of glue behind it - are you getting the picture?
