Spider Making Craft Ideas for Kids
Are you looking for some ideas on how to make spider crafts with children? If so, we hope that some of the information below will help give you some inspiration.
Spider themed craft projects are great for many themed kids craft sessions, not just as a children's Halloween craft idea! Why not use them for an incy wincy spider craft session or as an ugly bugs themed craft with snails and other creepy crawlies?
The Spider Body
The spider's body can be made from many different craft supplies or even recycle materials.
The preferred option for spider bodies is often pom poms as they give that round body look. A 35mm black pom pom works best for a basic bug. Perhaps obviously, the bigger the pom, the bigger the legs, nose and eyes that you will need.
We have many pom poms that are made exclusively for us, why not take a look?
As an alternative to pom pom spider bodies, you could also cut circles from black card attaching the legs underneath the disc body.
If you prefer to use a 3D shape but want to use something different to pom poms, you could use styrofoam balls or compressed cotton balls. Acrylic paints are best for colouring both of these - don't forget that you'll need paint brushes too. By painting the shapes you are extending the craft experience - you will need to allow drying time though. However, paint does dry fairly quickly on both styrofoam balls and compressed cotton balls.
Why not make your own pom poms with black wool and even using our pom poms making tools?
Hairy Legs - Yuuuukk!
Pipe cleaners work really well as spider legs. There are more options available than you may think..... Pipe cleaners aren't all the same, there are bumpy pipe cleaners, skinny pipe cleaners, chunky pipe cleaners and extra long pipe cleaners - so many different ways to make your hairy spider legs!
Why not use drinking straws for legs? These do take a little more patience when assembling as they are not so absorbent for adhesives, they do give a different result - especially if you use flexible straws.
Spider Faces
Googly eyes are great for spider making projects, make sure you get the right sizes though, to avoid that boggle eyed spider look! As an example, you will need 10mm googly eyes on a 35mm pom pom - any bigger and you won't get any of the other facial features on the pom pom.
You don't have to stick with the traditional black and white googly eyes, as they are also available in colours and glow in the dark too!
For the mouth you could use a small section of either red foam or red pipe cleaner.
Finally for the nose, a pom pom will work best. Again, as an example to help you, on a 35mm pom pom you will need a 7mm pom pom for the nose.
Spider Colours - Not Just Black..
We normally make spider crafts black but they can also be very effective in other colours too. However, green works well and both purple and orange work well for Halloween spider making crafts.
Why not make rainbow coloured spiders - after all ugly bug spiders aren't all black....

Adhesives
When using pom poms and pipecleaners, we always recommend that you use a good tacky glue. If you use a cheap PVA glue, you will find these watery and drying will take forever and the bond will be very weak, if any. A tacky glue is immediately "tacky", as the name suggests, and a good tacky glue will also dry more quickly.
Tacky glue will also work well if you are using straws or card. However, if combining straws and card together, you may find that a double sided tape works well for an immediate bond.
Jingle Spiders, Jingle Spiders, Jingle All The Way
What are you going to do with your spiders when they are made? Hang them up, add them to boxes, turn them into fridge magnets.......
If you are going to hang them up, you will give them an extra dimension with the movement - elastic works best.
On pom pom based bugs, it is advisable to find the core of the pom pom by separating the wool into two halves, winding the elastic around the core and tying this before fluffing the pom pom back up again. Do all of this before decorating it - for obvious reasons!
It would be great to add jingle bells to your hanging spiders to make them really different!
