How to Make Streamer Wands

These streamer wands are a great craft idea as part of a children's general craft session. They have so many uses and can be adapted in many, many different ways.

Girls will love to make them as a fairy wand or princess wand craft project. They can be used as cheerleader wands, being made in patriotic colours or team colours for both boys and girls.

They are also perfect as a party craft, because they are simple to complete but very effective. The children will also have something to take home with them.

Step by Step Craft Instructions

We suggest that an adult uses a bradle to make a small hole into the end of a chunky dowel - 6mm wide (or similar) dowels works best for this.
It is then preferable to screw the metal hook into the dowel before giving it to the crafters
Cut lengths of approximately 50-60cm off the crepe streamer roll (or crepe paper rolls cut into strips if you prefer) in the desired colours - it's great for the kids to cut different lengths as it gives a less uniform look to the craft.
Use elastic to carefully tie the centre of the sections to the metal hook. Do not tie too harshly as the paper will rip - tie it gently but tightly and in bundles to avoid ripping.
All done!

Add Some Sparkle

To extend the crafting experience, the crafters could tie some foil shred into the wand with the streamers. This adds a lovely twinkly twist and is great for fairy wands and Christmas too.

Adding the foil shred also has the added benefit of adding some bulk to the finished craft.

Add a Little Jingle!

Why not add some jingle bells into the wand? They will then make a lovely noise when shaken!

It is best to use short sections of elastic to tie these directly onto the metal hook - don't use long elastic sections as they will get tangled up in the streamers.

18mm -25mm jingle bells work best but you could use assorted sized and perhaps even assorted colours.

One More Crafty Idea....

Instead of (or as well as) using crepe paper, why not try doing this with curling ribbon.

If you are crafting with children who are old enough to run scissors lightly along chopped up sections of curling ribbon, then this will make a great alternative idea.

A top tip when using curling ribbon is to remember how much shorter it becomes once you curl it! A 60cm length of curling ribbon will probably only be about 15cm after being curled - practice first before you cut lots of curling ribbon!
