Pirate Crafts - Hat Making

By far the most popular pirate craft activity is pirate hat making. At littlecraftybugs, we have designed our own range of card pirate hats and patches specifically for group pirate craft sessions and pirate craft parties.

Our pirate hat craft kits are supplied in different colours and with the skull and crossbones to attach. These can then be further embellished with gel pens, foil confetti, glitter glue and almost anything else in your craft box.

What will I need?

Pirate hat kit – available in packs of 6, 10, 30 and 100.
Pirate themed stickers – great for adding to pirate hat crafts.
Foil confetti – generally used as table sprinkles, this foil confetti is absolutely perfect for pirate crafts.
Gel pens – great for embellishing black card pirate hats.
Glitter glue – used sparingly this can add some sparkle to pirate hat crafts.
Feathers – these can add a different twist to pirate hat crafts, especially if black or white.

Sealife Themed Crafts

We are often asked to recommend a craft idea that would be suitable for a pirate themed craft session but is not specifically a pirate craft.

This often happens where people are holding large pirate craft sessions or pirate craft parties. In these situations, it is sometimes good to have some crafts that complement the pirate theme. We would recommend a sealife craft, as this theme supports pirate craft sessions very well.

As an idea, you could perhaps make pirate hats, pirate crafty bugs and some mini sealife collages.

Pirate Crafty Bugs Craft Kits

At littlecraftybugs.co.uk, we are well respected for our unique range of crafty bug craft kits, which are based around fluffy pom poms and foam.

We have some great pirate crafty bug kits, in pack sizes ranging from individual kits to packs of 100 for large groups, they are offered in a traditional pirate style and also a pink version for girls.

These are ideal for kids to make as an extra craft at a craft party or for kids to make two or three bugs for a pirate crafty bug making session.

Pirate Crafts – Door hangers

Doorhanger making projects are always popular and they are even more popular in pirate craft sessions.

At littlecraftybugs, we sell a terrific range of doorhanger based craft kits and craft supplies for your pirate crafts.

The doorhanger blanks can be made from foam or card, with card being the most popular choice. These card doorhanger shapes can be decorated with almost anything from your craft box. However, we have given you some ideas below to help you decide.

Foil confetti – generally used as table sprinkles, this foil confetti is absolutely perfect for pirate crafts.
Gel pens – great for embellishing black doorhangers.
Glitter glue – used sparingly this can add some sparkle to your doorhangers.
Foam stickers – a 3D version of paper stickers.
Pom poms – always popular for any kids crafts, a 12mm pom pom would probably be the best size for a doorhanger.

Pirate Crafts - Treasure Chest Decorating

Another popular pirate craft activity is treasure chest decorating, especially using mini paper mache boxes. These can be decorated with almost anything and are perfect for keeping pirate treasures in after the craft session.

The first consideration with box decorating craft projects is whether your pirate craft session will allow enough time for paint to dry and then enough time again for these to be embellished. If so, you would be best starting with a plain paper mache box and painting with acrylic paints.

However, if there isn’t enough time for paint to dry or you just want to avoid paint, you could either use a coloured box or use a paper mache box without paint. The advantage you have with a pirate treasure chest crafts is that the chests should be brown anyway, which is the colour of natural paper mache boxes.

We have given you some ideas below for a freestyle pirate treasure chest craft, avoiding paint.

Components required:

Natural treasure chests, either mini or standard size. The mini size works best when it’s one of several crafts or at a shorter pirate craft session.

Pirate themed stickers – great for many pirate crafts including treasure chests.
Foil confetti – generally used as table sprinkles, this foil confetti is absolutely perfect for pirate crafts and box decorating activities. This is essentially sequins but without holes!
Glitter glue – used sparingly this can add some sparkle to pirate crafts.
Jewels and gems – no treasure chest would be complete without jewels. Remember to keep them small though and avoid flowers!
Pom-poms – the best size to use for these mini boxes is a 6-7mm wide pom-pom.

When decorating mini boxes, keep your embellishments small. Lots of mini embellishments will give a far better effect than a few oversized ones and they’re also more likely to stay on the box. Make sure you colour coordinate the embellishments – purple, gold and silver are always the most popular colours for treasure chests.

If you are making these as pirate party crafts, why not use them as mini party “bags” and add a few treasures to each one before the guests go home. Mini chocolates and gold pirate coins both work well.

Let’s Talk About Glue

At littlecraftybugs.co.uk, we have coined the phrase “PVA slide” referring to the use of standard PVA adhesives for crafts where a quick adhesion is required.

Perhaps we can paint you a picture? A group of kids spend a period of time decorating their pirate treasure chests, embellishing them with gems, pom poms and sequins. Wow, don’t they look great! How long do you think it will take for the first item to slowly slide down the side of the box in a trail of PVA and “hit the deck”? Not long!

We strongly recommend either using a tacky or fast tack glue for kids’ crafts where a quick result is required. Kids obviously can’t use superglue or hot glue guns. Therefore, these glues really are the next best option. Our tacky glue is our best selling glue for kids’ crafts; it is far tackier than PVA from the outset and will be relatively dry within 10-15 minutes from application, compared to the hours it takes for normal PVA to dry.

As an alternative you could limit the items you are using on your pirate crafts to only self-adhesive items, such as stickers and self-adhesive foam shapes.
