Crown making craft activities are one of the perennial princess craft ideas, they can be made as inexpensively or as lavishly as you like. Perhaps, the best thing about them is that they are completely freestyle and kids can really get creative.
Components required:
Basic guidelines:
For each crown you will need 60cm of card, at the most, for a child’s head. This would mean that from a plain corrugated card roll you could make at least 24 crowns. Please bear in mind that the other role designs are different lengths, so crown numbers will vary from design to design.
Cut the crown to length before the crafters start decorating them; remember that you will need an overlap to join the ends together.
The crowns need to be decorated before the ends are joined together as they are almost impossible to decorate once they are assembled.
Glitter glue must be used sparingly as it can take forever to dry if used too heavily.
Don’t use paper stickers on corrugated card crowns, self-adhesive foam shapes work well though.
If you would prefer to buy pre-cut crown blanks, rather than card roll, we have a great selection in our shop. Our own unique “half head” crowns have elastic so they can easily be adjusted to size.
As an alternative to buying the components, you may like to look at our range of pre-packed crown making craft kits.
Crown making crafts are also great for Christmas themed craft parties and as a general party craft when the kids can make them and wear them straight away.
Tiara making princess crafts are also extremely popular – generally more so with girls than boys though! At littlecraftybugs.co.uk we sell an exclusive range of card tiara blanks and foam tiaras for decorating, together with some great tiara making craft kits. The same materials can be used to embellish these as with crowns above but they generally use far less materials in view of their smaller surface area.
At littlecraftybugs.co.uk, we have coined the phrase “PVA slide” referring to the use of standard PVA adhesives for crafts where a quick adhesion is required.
Perhaps we can paint you a picture? A group of girls spend a period of time decorating their pretty princess crowns flat on a table, embellishing them with gems, pom poms and sequins. Wow, don’t they look great! The crown shapes are then rolled up and fitted to the girls’ heads and they start to wear them. How long do you think it will take for the first item to slowly slide down the crown in a trail of PVA and hit them on the nose? Not long!
We strongly recommend either using a tacky or fast tack glue for kids crafts where a quick result is required. Kids obviously can’t use superglue or hot glue guns. Therefore, these glues really are the next best option. Our tacky glue is our best selling glue for kids crafts; it is far tackier than PVA from the outset and will be relatively dry within 10-15 minutes from application, compared to the hours it takes for normal PVA to dry.
As an alternative you could limit the items you are using on your crowns to only self-adhesive items, such as stickers and self-adhesive foam shapes.
Another popular princess craft activity is box decorating, especially using mini paper mache boxes. These can be decorated with almost anything and are perfect for keeping little princess treasures in after the craft session.
The first consideration with box decorating craft projects is whether your craft session will allow enough time for paint to dry and then enough time again for these to be embellished. If so, you would be best starting with a plain paper mache box and painting with acrylic paints.
However, if there isn’t enough time for paint to dry or you just want to avoid paint, then our range of silver and gold foiled boxes will be perfect. We also have some lovely white boxes and other colours too, so the options are fairly extensive.
We have given you some ideas below for a freestyle princess treasure box craft session, avoiding paint.

If you are making these as princess party crafts, why not use them as mini party “bags” and add a few treasures to each one before the guests go home.Mini chocolates and bead bracelets both work well.
In addition to selling the components for your princess box making crafts, we also sell some great box decorating kits, ideal as princess party crafts.
Making wands is always popular as part of a princess craft session, they can turn a princess into a fairy princess.
As the basis for a wand you can use either a wooden dowel or pencil, topping them with stars cut from card or foam. They can be made using a wand making kit or by using wand making components, all of which are available in our children’s craft shop.
Assuming that you are wanting to design your own princess wand making craft, we have given you some ideas below to make these in the easiest but most effective way:

At littlecraftybugs.co.uk, we are renowned for our unique range of crafty bug craft kits, which are based around fluffy pom poms and foam.
We have some lovely princess crafty bug kits, in pack sizes ranging from individual kits to packs of 100 for large groups.
These are ideal for kids to make as an extra craft at a craft party or for kids to make two or three different bugs for a princess crafty bug making session.
It goes without saying that boys don’t want to wear pretty pink and jewelled crowns or tiaras, normally!
We recommend two ways of approaching this for boys who are attending a friends or siblings princess themed craft party or for mixed group craft sessions.
If you are making crowns it’s fairly easy to overcome this by buying a boys colour of card roll as your base as well as a girls colour, you could even stick to metallic gold or metallic silver. Whether you choose different colours or all the same, make sure you don’t only buy pink and flowery embellishments – they’re not generally very popular with boys!
Similarly, a wand making project can be changed from a princess or fairy craft to a wizard craft by just changing the colours you use.
If you are making other princess crafts apart from wands and crowns, the best way to accommodate boys is to choose some knight themed craft kits, these are extremely popular with boys. Our range includes knight themed crafty bug kits, shields and castles.
Craft parties are continuing to grow in popularity and princess craft parties are no exception.
