Simple Mask Making with Kids - Ideas And Hints

If you are working to a tight budget, kids mask decorating crafts can be extremely cost effective. You can add as little or as much as you like, depending on your budget. Great for group crafts!

For the most basic mask crafts, our colour-in masks are perfect as you just need to add felt tip pens or pencils! A slightly more involved craft might including sticking gems, jewels or feathers onto one of our many mask bases. For an even more advanced craft, why not try decopatching one of our beautiful paper mache masks?

In one of our examples, we have used our white plastic masks and decorated it with pens and just an embellishment of glitter glue. Perfect as a simple group craft project!

  1. Feathers & sequins are a real must have! Probably the most popular children's mask making embellishment is feathers, closely followed by sequins or foil confetti.
  2. However, with both of these you will need to use a tacky glue otherwise the feathers and sequins are likely to pop off the background when bent around the crafters face.
  3. A top tip for children's mask making is to make sure you have the right sticky stuff.
  4. Have you seen the "PVA slide"? This is the phrase we have coined to describe what happens when a child makes a craft item on a flat surface and then lifts it up - PVA glue often results in the attached components sliding down the now vertical surface! Imagine beads with blob of glue sliding down a mask landing a child's chin or clothes and you'll get the picture!
  5. We always recommend a tacky glue, especially with heavier craft components and also on plastic masks. If you don't have time for drying, you could use double sided tape but bear in mind taht, depending on the strength of the tape, this might not be a permanant fixture.
  6. Glitter glue looks great but needs drying time. We recommend that any glitter glue decorations go on last, as this minimises the risk of any hands being dipped into it!
