How To Use Napkins for Decopatch Crafts...

Napkin technique was around long before the on-trend decopatch (or decoupage). The concept is similar but you use napkins instead of decopatch paper!

We actually prefer using napkins to decopatch paper as we think you get a better range of colours and designs. Napkins are also thicker than decopatch papers, giving you a better intensity of colour. The 'decopatch' craft ideas from our Sunflower Summer inspiration area are made using napkins, take a look!

Napkins with several designs in one are perfect for achieving a patchwork look. Some napkins have a big emblem in the centre with patterns around it. Why not use the patterns to decopatch and then cut out the emblem and use as a feature!

If you buy a big pack of napkins you can use any leftovers for your next barbeque or party!

We've chosen a few of our favourite napkins below but there's plenty more to choose from! There's mixed bulk packs too, ideal for craft sessions.

How to Make It
  1. Paper mache, styrofoam and wood are our favourite bases for this technique. We have a huge variety of shapes to choose from on our site.
  2. If you use paper mache or wood, we recommend painting your base with a coat of white paint before you start. This will make sure that the colour stays true. Acrylic paint is best for this as it's generally a matt colour. Make sure the paint is dry before you start pasting the napkin on.
  3. Rip the napkin into pieces and paste them on, as you would with decopatch. When using a 3-ply napkin we tend to use two sheets, the one with the design and the white one below it.
  4. Gloss decopatch glue is the perfect way to give your project a shine. Matt glue will do the opposite. If you are using this technique on something that is likely to get wet, a tea tray for example, make sure that you use a waterproof gloss or decopatch glue.
